Fashion Sewing (Knits) - Level 1: Crew Neck Sweatshirt

Pre-Req: School of Sergers, or equivalent machine competency*
Max students: 10

*Please be sure that you have already taken Meissner's "School of Serging" class or are competent with the basic threading and operation of your machine, as this is a project based class.

Class Description:

In this introductory knit garment sewing class, you’ll begin discovering how to use your serger’s stitches and features to create a cozy crew neck sweatshirt. From serger basics to knit sewing techniques and assembling the garment, you’ll be guided step-by-step through the process.

Throughout the course, students will learn fundamental serger information, including how to choose and apply the appropriate serger stitch to different parts of the project, select needles and thread for different knit fabric types, and sew basic and curved seams with industry standard knit seam allowances. We'll also cover essential knit garment construction methods such as cutting knit fabric pieces accurately with regards to direction of stretch, sewing “stretch-to-fit” pieces, sewing in the round, and even sewing without pins (GASP)!

By the end of the class, students will leave with a completed and ready-to-wear crew neck sweatshirt and the confidence to dive into more complex knit sewing endeavors!

Please bring all TOOLS and PROJECT SUPPLIES on list to Session 1 (first class). You may bring your own from home, or purchase from Meissner prior to class.

TOOLS:

• Serger sewing machine* (including power cord and foot controller)
• Serger needles compatible with your machine type* (HAx1SP or ELx705) - Size 80/12 or 90/14, depending on fabric weight 
       *Check your machine's manual to confirm the correct needle system for your serger. If you are unsure, needles will also be discussed during Session 1 of class and can be purchased at that time.
  
• Sewing/quilt clips
• Straight pins
• Fabric shears
• All purpose/paper scissors
  
• Clear grid 2”x18” drafting ruler
  
• Seam ripper
  
• Thread snips (Optional)
• Notepad and pen/pencil (Optional)

PROJECT SUPPLIES: 

• Pattern (included in class cost - will be handed out at first class)
• Fabric**

• 4 Cones of spun polyester serger thread to match your fabric
